This week was Imagination Week at Sophie’s Cottage. Our 3 to 6 year olds built, explored, pretended and learned their last letter of the alphabet. Here is what the week of 17 to 21 August looked like.
A mini construction site
To spark creative thinking, we set up a mini construction site with small diggers and trucks. The children moved stones from one site to another, planned what to build and talked through their ideas together. Pretend play like this builds language, planning and teamwork.
Discovering nature
We enjoyed beautiful weather and spent lots of time outdoors. A snail found in the garden sparked plenty of curiosity and questions about where snails live and what they eat. Animal books were also a favourite this week, with children sharing facts and pictures with their friends.
The letter Z in five stations
Our School Readiness Program focused on the letter Z and its sound. The children made the letter Z with playdough, matched pictures and words that start with Z, and practised writing it. With Miss Olga’s support, they sounded out each word as they went.
Fun Friday: yoghurt bowls
Our little chefs made yoghurt bowls for afternoon tea using fresh apples, blueberries and strawberries. They talked about colours, textures and healthy food while they prepared them.
Try this at home
- Set up a pretend shop or building site at home with boxes and toy cars.
- Look for snails, ants or worms in the garden and talk about what they need to live.
- Make a fruit and yoghurt bowl together and name each fruit as you add it.
