Sustainability and storytelling at preschool

This week our 3 to 6 year olds learned how to care for the planet and how to tell their own stories. Here is what the week of 18 to 22 May looked like.

Recycling and sustainability

The children started learning about sustainability. They took part in outdoor sorting games, working out what goes in recycling and what goes in the bin. The Bees read Worms Are Our Friends and learned how tiny worms help keep our gardens healthy.

Children as storytellers

We read lots of stories by children’s authors, but we also value children as storytellers with their own ideas and experiences. This week children told and drew their own stories, building language, confidence and imagination.

Sea creatures

Small groups explored sea creatures through playdough and drawing. Rolling, pinching and shaping playdough builds the finger strength children need for holding a pencil.

Quiet time and calm minds

After lunch each day, our Butterflies read books together for 10 minutes, then do a calming 20 minute meditation before School Readiness. This quiet routine helps children rest, settle their bodies and get ready to focus.

Parachute fun

The children also loved parachute games, working together to lift and lower the parachute at the same time.

Try this at home

• Sort your recycling together and let your child decide where each item goes.
• Ask your child to tell you a story, write it down, and let them draw the pictures.
• Try two minutes of quiet breathing together before bed.

Sophie’s Cottage Kindergarten is a small, family-run preschool for children aged 3 to 6 at 9 Sophie Street, Telopea, open 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday. Families join us from Eastwood, Telopea and the suburbs around us.
