World Environment Day and a library visit

This week our 3 to 6 year olds went on an excursion, met some special animals and learned how to help our planet. Here is what the week of 1 to 5 June looked like.

Our walk to Dundas Library

The children put on their hi-vis vests and walked to Dundas Library with their educators and parent volunteers. The library staff had arranged a visit from Taronga Zoo, and the children met a range of animals up close. It was a wonderful way to practise walking safely, explore our local community and learn about wildlife.

World Environment Day

On Friday we celebrated World Environment Day. Miss Laila read 10 Things I Can Do to Help My World, and the children shared their own ideas, like turning off taps and lights and putting rubbish in the right bin.

Patterns inspired by Aboriginal art

Following Reconciliation Week, children explored patterns inspired by Aboriginal art using paint and cotton buds. This careful dotting builds fine motor control and respect for culture.

Counting, patterns and cutting

In School Readiness the children counted shapes and matched them to numbers, made colour patterns with pegs and pegboards, and practised cutting along straight and curved lines.

Try this at home

• Visit your local library together and let your child choose a book.
• Make a dot painting with cotton buds and talk about the patterns.
• Ask your child for one thing your family can do to help the planet.

Visit Sophie’s Cottage

Sophie’s Cottage Kindergarten is a small, family-run preschool for children aged 3 to 6 at 9 Sophie Street, Telopea, open 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday. Families join us from Oatlands, Telopea and the suburbs around us.

Most families with a 4-year-old coming 3 days a week pay $0 to $60 a week after government funding. Check your cost with our fees calculator, or book a tour to see our School Readiness Program in action.
