Mother’s Day at preschool

This week at Sophie’s Cottage our 3 to 6 year olds celebrated the wonderful mums in their lives, got moving and started learning to measure. Here is what the week of 4 to 8 May looked like.

Our Mother’s Day morning tea

We welcomed our mums for a Mother’s Day morning tea with beautiful weather and music. It was lovely to see so many smiles and to share this time together as a preschool community. Thank you to every family who joined us.

Movement and gymnastics

The children showed off their gymnastics skills on the mat, doing star jumps and “ta-da” jumps, where they land on two feet with their arms stretched out. Jumping and landing safely builds balance, coordination and body confidence.

Squeezing lemons

Outside, some children squeezed lemons to make juice. It was a great sensory experience as they watched the juice come out and talked about the smell and the sour taste.

The letter M and measuring

Our School Readiness Program was set up as hands-on stations focused on the letter M and early measuring. The children compared which things were longer and shorter, and practised recognising and writing M and m.

Gumboots wanted

We asked families for old gumboots to use in our sustainability and garden projects. Reusing old items is a simple way to show children how to care for the environment.

Try this at home

• Ask your child what they love most about the special people in their life.
• Use a piece of string to measure things around the house: is the table longer than the couch?
• Squeeze an orange or lemon together and talk about the smell and taste.

Sophie’s Cottage Kindergarten is a small, family-run preschool for children aged 3 to 6 at 9 Sophie Street, Telopea, open 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday. Families join us from Dundas Valley, Telopea and the suburbs around us.
