Healthy eating at preschool

This week our 3 to 6 year olds learned about healthy food and looking after their bodies. Here is what the week of 15 to 19 June looked like.

Healthy choices

Our Butterflies read Oscar’s Lunchbox and talked about why we need different kinds of food to grow and play. The children then created their own healthy plates, choosing foods from each food group.

Shopping with paper bags

The children played grocery shopping with toy food and paper bags, sorting “everyday” foods from “sometimes” foods. Using paper bags also started a conversation about choosing reusable bags to help the environment.

A visit from Telopea Public School

A teacher from Telopea Public School visited to read the story Tom’s Trousers. Meeting a real school teacher is a gentle way to make big school feel familiar.

Writing our names

In School Readiness many children practised recognising and writing their first name, and some their surname too. Being able to find and write their name is one of the most useful skills for the first weeks of school.

Caring for our garden

The children helped water the plants in our garden and are looking forward to watching them grow.

Try this at home

• Let your child help pack their lunchbox with one food from each food group.
• Write your child’s name on paper and let them trace it, then try on their own.
• Sort the shopping into “everyday” and “sometimes” foods together.

Visit Sophie’s Cottage

Sophie’s Cottage Kindergarten is a small, family-run preschool for children aged 3 to 6 at 9 Sophie Street, Telopea, open 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday. Families join us from Ermington, Telopea and the suburbs around us.

Most families with a 4-year-old coming 3 days a week pay $0 to $60 a week after government funding. Check your cost with our fees calculator, or book a tour to see our School Readiness Program in action.
