After the long weekend, our 3 to 6 year olds spent the week gardening, building and playing pretend. Here is what the week of 8 to 12 June looked like.
Our police station
The children loved our police station role play. They dressed up as police officers and took turns being the officer and the person asking for help. Role play like this teaches children about community helpers and how to ask for help when they need it.
The farm shop
Our home corner became a farm shop stocked with toy fruit and vegetables. The children took turns as shoppers and cashiers, counting items and practising polite conversation. A small group also built a farm together with mini LEGO, sharing ideas and pieces.
Gardening and the seasons
We learned about gardening and the seasons. On Friday the groups came together for gardening with Miss Laila, who read Where’s the Worm, a story about why worms help plants grow strong. Then the children got their hands in the soil.
A fire truck from pegs
At the pegboard, one child chose to make a fire truck. Following an outline, they picked the right pegs and colours, building concentration and fine motor skills.
Try this at home
- Plant a few seeds in a cup and let your child water them each day.
- Set up a pretend shop with food from the pantry and a few coins.
- Talk about who our community helpers are: police, firefighters, doctors and nurses.
