Science Week at preschool

Our week, 27 to 31 July 2026
Our Week at Sophie’s

This was Science Week at Sophie’s Cottage. Our 3 to 6 year olds made predictions, ran experiments and asked lots of “why” questions. Here is what the week of 27 to 31 July looked like.

Our volcano experiment

With Miss Navdeep, the children made a volcano using vinegar, bicarb soda and food colouring. Before starting, everyone predicted what would happen. Then came the fizz. Making and checking predictions is how real scientists work.

Walking water and sound

Our Butterflies watched coloured water travel along paper towels from one cup to another, slowly mixing into new colours. They also explored how water and different objects make different sounds.

Balancing

The children practised balancing their own bodies on one leg, then tried balancing objects. It is a fun way to learn about weight and keep bodies strong.

Sponge stamping on recycled bags

In the playground, children used sponges to stamp shapes onto recycled shopping bags, mixing science, art and sustainability.

The letter W and measuring

In School Readiness we focused on the letter W and its sound, explored 2D shapes, and measured objects using non-standard units like blocks and pencils.

Little helpers and a new face

Our preschoolers proudly took on the job of sharpening the classroom pencils. We also welcomed Miss Alison to our team while Miss Laila is away.

Starting school in 2027?

We shared the details of Dundas Public School’s Kindergarten 2027 information night with our families.

Try this at home

  • Make a mini volcano at home with bicarb soda and vinegar in a cup.
  • Place a paper towel between two cups, one with coloured water, and watch it “walk”.
  • Measure the couch in “hand spans” and then in “shoes”.
