Little chefs and healthy cooking

This week our 3 to 6 year olds kept learning about healthy food, this time with their sleeves rolled up in the kitchen. Here is what the week of 22 to 26 June looked like.

Zucchini muffins

The children made zucchini muffins together, measuring, mixing and talking about how vegetables can be part of a yummy snack. Cooking builds maths skills, patience and a willingness to try new foods.

Fruit and vegetable sensory play

Children explored a variety of fruits and vegetables with all their senses: touching, smelling, looking inside and talking about colours and textures.

The bakery cafe

Our bakery cafe was busy all week, with children “baking” playdough cakes and serving their friends. Miss Olivia also helped the children make beautiful paper lanterns.

Dental check-up day

On Thursday a mobile team of registered dental practitioners visited Sophie’s Cottage for a dental check-up day, a simple way for families to get their child’s teeth checked without an extra appointment.

Working together

In School Readiness, children chose a buddy and worked together on shared problem-solving tasks, practising teamwork and taking turns.

Try this at home

• Bake something simple together and let your child measure and pour.
• Cut open a capsicum or apple and look at the seeds inside.
• Make “brushing teeth” a game: two minutes, top and bottom, every morning and night.

Visit Sophie’s Cottage

Sophie’s Cottage Kindergarten is a small, family-run preschool for children aged 3 to 6 at 9 Sophie Street, Telopea, open 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday. Families join us from Sydney Olympic Park, Telopea and the suburbs around us.

Most families with a 4-year-old coming 3 days a week pay $0 to $60 a week after government funding. Check your cost with our fees calculator, or book a tour to see our School Readiness Program in action.
