Road safety for preschoolers

Our week, 10 to 14 August 2026
Our Week at Sophie’s

This was Road Safety Week at Sophie’s Cottage. Our 3 to 6 year olds learned how to stay safe near roads, went bug hunting and practised the letter Y. Here is what the week of 10 to 14 August looked like.

Learning road signs

Our Butterflies joined Miss Navdeep to learn about road signs, including Stop, Pedestrian Crossing, No Entry and the 60 speed zone sign. The children were very interested and loved spotting the signs in pictures.

Holding hands and standing back

With Miss Olga, the children read the book Andy’s Off to Kindy. Through Andy’s journey, they learned important pedestrian safety messages: holding an adult’s hand, standing well back from the road, waiting safely and walking hand in hand. The children shared their own stories about walking to the shops and to school.

A mini beast safari

We made the most of the windy but sunny weather with a Mini Beast Safari. The children searched the garden for insects and tiny creatures, looked closely at what they found and shared their discoveries with friends.

The letter Y in five stations

Our School Readiness Program was set up as five hands-on stations. The children made the letter Y with playdough, traced uppercase and lowercase Y in the NSW Foundation Font, listened for words that start with the y sound, and matched uppercase and lowercase letters. Rotating through stations keeps children busy, focused and working in small groups.

Fun Friday cooking

On Friday the children made sandwiches for afternoon tea with Miss Navdeep, a real sense of achievement and a life skill they will use for years.

Try this at home

  • On your next walk, practise “stop, look, listen and think” at every crossing.
  • Play “spot the sign”: how many road signs can your child name on the way to preschool?
  • Let your child help make their own sandwich for lunch.
