Since 1996
Sophie’s Cottage Kindergarten was founded in 1996 by Miss Susan, a primary school teacher who was passionate about educating young children and giving them a strong start before school.
For nearly 30 years, children from Telopea, Dundas Valley, Dundas and the suburbs around them have had their first taste of learning here.
A lot has changed since then. What has not changed is the size. We have stayed small on purpose, with only 28 children a day, because that is what lets every educator know every child.
Many families travel past other centres to come to us, and some of the children we taught are now grown up. Our trainee, Miss Jess, first came through our doors as a preschooler herself.
A building with a history
Our home is a restored former Salvation Army Church. We have kept many of its original features, so the building has a warmth and character that a new-build centre cannot copy.
Inside are our two groups: the Bee room for 3 to 4 year olds, and the Butterfly room for 4 to 6 year olds getting ready for school.
Family owned
Sophie’s Cottage is owned and run by a local family, not a large chain. Our Director, Miss Janelle, is here every day and leads most of our tours herself.
Janelle is a qualified Early Childhood Teacher. Before that she spent nine years as a Rehabilitation Counsellor, supporting people with disabilities, mental health challenges, illnesses and injuries. That mix of experience shapes how we care for each child.
Bachelor of Psychological Science · Master of Rehabilitation Counselling · Graduate Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care

Our philosophy
We believe every child is capable, curious, and full of potential. We create a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment where children feel valued, respected, and confident to explore, learn, and grow. By recognising each child’s unique strengths, interests, and learning journey, we foster a strong sense of belonging while supporting every child to thrive at their own pace.
